Casual Mountain Dining in Ridgway
While Ridgway is known for its laid-back, small-town charm, its food scene continues to attract visitors looking for unique culinary experiences.
White Buffalo Restaurant + Bar

Located in the heart of Chipeta Lodge Resort & Spa, White Buffalo Restaurant + Bar has quickly become one of Ridgway’s standout foodie destinations. The restaurant offers upscale casual dining with sweeping views of the San Juan Mountains, creating an atmosphere that feels both refined and relaxed. The restaurant features thoughtfully prepared cuisine inspired by Colorado’s Western Slope, utilizing seasonal ingredients and contemporary American flavors.
Start with appetizers like their house special Chili Relleno bites, or a Southwest Flatbread. Follow it with one of their locally-inspired dishes like the San Juan Smashburger, Birria Tacos or Elote Kale Salad. Pair your meal with a curated selection of wines, craft beers, and signature cocktails crafted to complement the mountain setting. Try the Chipeta Old Fashioned, a Prickly Pear Margarita or a San Juan Mule, depending on what you’re in the mood for – fresh and clean, or warm and spicy. And for an adult dessert beverage, you might consider the Ridgway Crud – whiskey, butterscotch liqueur and vanilla ice cream.
One of White Buffalo’s most distinctive features is its rooftop deck which is an ideal gathering space for Colorado’s long summer evenings. And since Ridgway is a certified dark sky community, after dark when the stars come out is just as spectacular as the sunset. With occasional live music hosted on the rooftop, this is a great choice for date night or meeting up with friends.

Dining in Ouray: Big Flavor in the Switzerland of America

Just 15 minutes south of Ridgway, you’ll find yourself in Ouray on one of Colorado’s most picturesque main streets. Nested below towering peaks, the town’s historic district is filled with restaurants, cafes, and bars that are perfect for a foodie in an exploring mood. Here are a few of our top picks this summer.
BrickHouse 737
Locally owned and operated since 2016, BrickHouse 737 works with local farms, dairies, ranchers, and wineries to provide guests with contemporary American cuisine using local ingredients. Often regarded as one of Ouray’s premier dining experiences, their intimate setting makes it ideal for date nights and special occasions.
For starters, we like the Smoked Trout Dip or the Shrimp & Sweetcorn Fritters. They have a short list of simple salads, all of which you can add a protein to (consider adding a little prime steak). We tend to skip the salad and go straight to mains like the Braised Boneless Short Rib, Elk Bolognese, or Braised Rabbit and Rooster Comb Pasta. But honestly there are so many to choose from, you may need to take longer than usual with the menu.
For visitors seeking an elevated dining experience for a truly special occasion in Ouray, BrickHouse 737 consistently earns a place at the top of recommendation lists.
- Open 7 days a week, dinner service only, 5 pm – 9 pm
Taste Ouray

For guests interested in a small and focused menu that changes frequently based on seasonal ingredients, this restaurant keeps it interesting. The menu features a variety of dishes with select cuts of beef, pork, chicken, seafood, and includes a vegetarian option. Sauces complement each dish along with two sides. You can sample fresh housemade burrata, blackened shrimp with mango salsa, or artichoke and spinach dip with naan bread.

The Smokehouse @ Ouray Riverside Resort
The Smokehouse provides hearty portions of comfort food and mountain-town hospitality in a casual family-style atmosphere. The informal setting makes it a favorite among families, outdoor enthusiasts, and visitors looking to refuel before the next adventure. This place offers classic, Western fare from hearty breakfast like eggs, sausage, bacon, biscuits and gravy to brisket, ribs, pulled pork and smoked trout. If you want to experience Western cuisine fit for ranchers, ranch hands and their families, this is a winner.

Tips for Summer Dining in Ridgway and Ouray
Summer is the busiest travel season in the San Juan Mountains, so planning ahead can help ensure the best dining experience.
Make reservations when possible. Popular restaurants often fill up quickly, particularly on weekends and holidays.
Arrive early for outdoor seating. Mountain evenings are beautiful, and patio tables are in high demand throughout the summer. Plan for the sun, which is still high at 5 pm, so remember sunblock and bring layers of clothing if you plan to sit outside. 5 pm could be the hottest time of the day on some patios, but by sunset the temperatures will cool significantly, leaving you wanting a sweater or light jacket.
Pair dining with adventure. Start a hike early in the morning and enjoy brunch after hiking; afternoon thunderstorms, winds and weather can kick up starting around 1 pm. Do early dinner before an outdoor music concert, or do cocktails on a deck after a day-long rafting or Jeep excursion.
Savor the Best of the San Juans
Ridgway and Ouray may be best known for their dramatic landscapes, but their culinary offerings are equally worthy of exploration. Together, these neighboring mountain towns create a dining destination that blends local flavors, welcoming hospitality, and unforgettable scenery. Come hungry. The mountains may bring you here, but the food will make you want to stay a little longer.
