From Ridgway, head south on US-550 to Ouray, a beautiful drive even before you reach the famous section of highway beyond town.

Spend some time exploring Ouray before continuing south toward Red Mountain Pass and Silverton.

This stretch of US-550 is known as the Million Dollar Highway. In autumn, golden aspens appear against steep canyon walls and red, orange and gray mountain slopes. It’s one of the defining drives of the San Juan Mountains.

For something quieter, turn your attention east toward Owl Creek Pass and the country surrounding Silver Jack Reservoir.

This area combines golden hillsides with dramatic rock formations and broad mountain vistas. Owl Creek Pass sits roughly 16 miles from US-550 and reaches an elevation of about 10,120 feet. The dirt road is generally accessible to ordinary vehicles in good, dry conditions, although higher clearance and four-wheel drive become advisable when roads are wet or snowy.

It is a wonderful alternative for travelers who have already seen Dallas Divide and want to explore a less-traveled corner of the San Juans.

Get Out of the Car: Fall Hiking Around Ridgway

Driving isn’t the only way to experience autumn here.

Sometimes the best way to appreciate an aspen grove is to stand beneath it.

West Dallas Creek Trail

Near Ridgway and Dallas Divide, West Dallas Creek offers the chance to move from panoramic views into the landscape itself. The trail is roughly 3.8 miles round trip and is generally considered a moderate outing. Even the approach is a beautiful fall drive.

Pack water, layers and a snack and make this a leisurely half-day excursion.

Ouray’s Trails

Ouray provides plenty of opportunities to combine hiking with fall sightseeing. One shorter option is the Baby Bathtubs Trail, a roughly 0.7-mile loop reached near the Amphitheater Campground area.

The larger Ouray trail network gives visitors the chance to look down on the town and surrounding mountains from above, making fall especially rewarding.

One of the best periods for darker skies is near the September 11 New Moon. With little moonlight to compete with the stars, this is an especially good time to search for the Milky Way and fainter celestial objects. 

September 14-20: Prime Sky Viewing

NASA highlights September 14–20 as an opportunity to use the Moon to locate Antares and the “Teapot” of Sagittarius, with darker skies revealing the Milky Way’s bright central region. Then look west after sunset.

September 22: September Equinox

September 26: Watch the Harvest Moon Rise

September’s celestial finale is one of the easiest sky events for everyone to enjoy. On September 26, the Harvest Moon rises in the east shortly after sunset, accompanied in the same region of the sky by Saturn and much fainter Neptune. Saturn can be spotted with the naked eye, while Neptune requires binoculars or a telescope.

The Harvest Moon is especially fitting in the mountains. Watch the last sunlight disappear from the peaks as the moon begins rising on the opposite horizon. Bring a blanket. Pour something warm. Let everyone keep phones in their pockets for a while.

Children can search for shapes on the lunar surface. Couples can simply sit together. Friends can talk about everything—or nothing at all.

October Brings Meteors from Halley’s Comet

The show continues after September.

From October 2 through November 7, Earth passes through debris associated with Halley’s Comet, producing the annual Orionid meteor shower. The Orionids peak on the night of October 21–22, 2026 and typically produce roughly 10 to 20 meteors per hour under dark conditions.

The Orionids are particularly beautiful because they are extraordinarily fast, entering Earth’s atmosphere at about 41 miles per second.

Meteor showers are rewarded by patience. Plan to bundle up, find a comfortable place, settle into a sleeping bag or a launch chair, and allow your eyes to adjust. Scan a wide portion of the sky. Then wait.

Part of the wonder is not knowing exactly when that sudden streak of light will arrive.

November: Fireballs and the Leonids

As fall deepens, another pair of meteor showers makes November especially appealing for night-sky viewers.

The Southern Taurids are active through much of fall and reach a listed peak around November 4–5, 2026. The Northern Taurids peak around November 11–12. Neither produces huge numbers of meteors, but the Taurids have a different calling card: bright fireballs. The Northern Taurids’ 2026 peak also benefits from a Moon only about 7 percent illuminated, creating favorable dark-sky conditions after the crescent Moon sets.

Next arrive the Leonids, active November 6–30 and peaking November 16–17. Leonid meteors are exceptionally fast and can be bright and colorful. Imagine seeing one streak across a cold, clear Colorado sky while standing on a rooftop with a full view of the San Juan Mountains.

Perched high above the town of Ouray at an elevation of approximately 8,400 feet, Amphitheater Campground is surrounded by towering cliffs, Gambel oak, and fragrant pine forests. It offers a peaceful mountain setting with spectacular views overlooking the natural rock amphitheater that gives the campground its name. 

Located just two miles from downtown Ouray, it provides the balance of secluded camping and convenient access to restaurants, shops, hot springs, and local attractions.

The campground offers approximately 35 single-family campsites, including several tent-only sites, making it ideal for tents, small trailers, and RVs. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and campfire ring for relaxing evenings under the stars. Amenities include vault toilets, potable drinking water, trash collection, and easy access to nearby hiking trails.

One of Amphitheater Campground’s biggest draws is its proximity to the popular Upper Cascade Falls Trail, while the Baby Bathtubs and Chief Ouray Mine trails are just steps away. Jeep enthusiasts also appreciate the campground’s close access to the Alpine Loop and other renowned four-wheel-drive routes. 

Angel Creek Campground

Angel Creek Campground features approximately 15 designated campsites available on a first-come, first-served basis. The campground is best suited for tents and smaller camping setups, as it is not designed for large RVs or trailers. Each site includes a tent pad, picnic table, campfire ring with grill, and a bear-resistant food storage box to help campers safely store food in bear country. Additional amenities include two vault toilets and a potable water source near the campground entrance.

If you’re eloping and camping is your accommodation of choice, you’ll appreciate Angel Creek for its quiet atmosphere, spacious campsites, and easy access to hiking, fishing, wildlife viewing, and scenic drives throughout the San Juan Mountains. Angel Creek Campground offers a simple yet memorable camping experience surrounded by the natural beauty of southwest Colorado.

Thistledown Campground

Thistledown Campground is a small U.S. Forest Service campground tucked into Canyon Creek just west of Ouray, making it a favorite basecamp for hikers, photographers, and Jeep enthusiasts. Located along Camp Bird Road near the historic Thistledown site and the Weehawken Trailhead, the campground provides convenient access to Yankee Boy Basin, Mount Sneffels, and several renowned four-wheel-drive routes. Amenities include vault toilets, but campers should note that there is no potable water or trash service, so visitors should come prepared to pack in everything they need and pack out all waste.

   To make it official in Colorado, you’ll need to obtain a marriage license, then complete the ceremony within 35 days, and return the signed license to the county clerk within 63 days. There is no waiting period, no blood test required, and no witnesses or traditional officiants are needed. You can obtain a License from any Colorado County Clerk & Recorder’s office. Once signed (within 35 days), you must return it to the office.
   
   Colorado lets you legally marry yourselves without an officiant or a judge. But you can also have an ordained clergy member, judge, magistrate, or public official perform the ceremony if you prefer. 
   
   You do not need any witnesses to sign the license. Although favorite dogs are a popular choice for witnesses at a ceremony; they don’t sign the license.
